In this episode of iTechghana Rumble, it is Huawei Y9 Prime 2019 vs TECNO Phantom 9. The Y9 Prime 2019 boasts a motorized pop-up selfie camera, notchless display and triple rear cameras, while the Phantom 9 costs much less and boasts some features you won’t find on most devices in its price range. How does this match end?
Huawei launched the Y9 Prime 2019 smartphone in Ghana this week, nearly two months after it was first announced in Europe. The Y9 Prime 2019 has a lot going for it – from its pop-up selfie camera, to its notchless display and triple rear cameras, and even its funky colors. With a price tag of GHc1,300, it is the cheapest phone with a pop-up selfie camera in Ghana.
However, the Huawei Y9 Prime 2019 has got competition, another phone that launched shortly before it did – the TECNO Phantom 9. The new Phantom phone deviates from its predecessors as it costs much less while boasting some features you won’t find on most devices in its price range. It has an AMOLED display, the trendy in-display fingerprint scanner, 6GB of RAM, and triple rear cameras all for GHc1,300 . Sweet, right?
If you are planning to get a new phone between the range of GHc900 to GHc1,500 , these two phones should fall under your radar. If you are wondering which of these you should get, this
post should help you make that decision.
Huawei Y9 Prime 2019 vs TECNO Phantom 9: Design
Design is subjective, so this boils down to your preferences. Nevertheless, we still have to talk about it.
The TECNO Phantom 9 comes in a single color variant – Lapland Aurora – which has a gradient finish. It looks nice and will turn heads if you decide not to hide it in a case. However, the fact that there is only one colour variant available means you and the other thousands of folks who purchase have to settle for the same type.
The Huawei Y9 Prime 2019, on the other hand, comes in three colors – Midnight Black, Sapphire Blue, and Emerald Green, each with a dual-tone finish that stands out from all the other phones sold in the market right now. You also don’t have to worry about hiding it in a case as the back is made from plastic and not glass.
Display: Huawei Y9 Prime 2019 vs TECNO Phantom 9
The Huawei Y9 Prime 2019 has the bigger display – a 6.59-inch LCD panel devoid of any kind of notch or punch hole – no interruptions and no black bars while watching a video or surfing the web, thanks to it adopting the pop-up camera design.
The Phantom 9 has a smaller 6.4-inch screen with the exact resolution as the Huawei (FHD+ 2340 x 1080), but it has a notch at the top for the selfie camera. Where it does have an edge over the Huawei is its use of an AMOLED display which has better color reproduction than LCD screens. However, do note that AMOLED screens are usually more expensive to replace.
If you hate notches, then the Huawei Y9 Prime 2019 is the device to get. If you don’t care about the notch, the Phantom 9 with its AMOLED screen will serve you well.
Processor and RAM: Huawei Y9 Prime 2019 vs TECNO Phantom 9
The Phantom 9 is powered by MediaTek’s Helio P35 processor – a 12nm octa-core processor clocked at 2.3GHz and with a PowerVR GPU. The Y9 Prime 2019 has a Kirin 710F (same performance as the Kirin 710 but with a different packaging process) which is also a 12nm octa-core processor clocked at 2.2GHz and has a Mali GPU.
If you are into benchmarks, then it will interest you to know that the Kirin 710F beats the Helio P35 hands-down. In an AnTuTu benchmark comparison of the Xiaomi Mi Play (which is powered by the Helio P35 like the Phantom 9) vs the Honor 8X (Kirin 710), the Mi Play scored 87,384 points while the Honor 8X scored 140,524 points. That is a difference of over 50k points.
Even with the Phantom 9 having more RAM (6GB) as against the Y9 Prime’s 4GB of RAM, it still can’t match its performance. The Huawei clearly wins this round.
Both phones have 128GB of storage, so there is no winner in that category.
Cameras: Huawei Y9 Prime 2019 vs TECNO Phantom 9:
The Phantom 9 has a triple camera setup – a 16MP primary camera, a 2MP secondary camera for portrait photos, and an 8MP 120° ultra-wide angle camera. This is the same configuration for the Huawei Y9 Prime 2019. Both manufacturers have added AI features such as automatic scene recognition. However, only a camera test will determine which phone comes out on top as camera optimizations differ between phones even if they use the same sensor(s).
For the selfie camera, the TECNO has a 32MP sensor while the Huawei has a 16MP sensor. As we all know, the pixel count doesn’t matter, so only a camera comparison test will determine the winner. However, the Phantom 9 has an edge here as it has dual flash in front for brighter selfies. The Huawei illuminates the screen for selfies.
Battery: Huawei Y9 Prime 2019 vs TECNO Phantom 9:
The Huawei Y9 Prime 2019 packs a 4000mAh battery while the TECNO Phantom 9 has a 3500mAh battery. Both phones don’t have support for fast charging, which is a bummer but the Huawei should last longer even with its slightly larger display. 500mAh is a big difference when it comes to battery capacity.
Software: Huawei Y9 Prime 2019 vs TECNO Phantom 9:
Both phones run Android 9 Pie but with HiOS on the TECNO and EMUI 9.0 on the Huawei. Both custom versions will have their own unique features but that isn’t where software stops. Regular updates are important too.
Huawei does a great job at churning out updates to its phones even years after they have been released. Although, there is no official word on it yet, the Y9 Prime 2019 has a high chance of getting Android Q. I don’t know how great TECNO’s update game is but I’ll keep my fingers crossed.
Price and Conclusion: Huawei Y9 Prime 2019 vs TECNO Phantom 9
The Huawei Y9 Prime 2019 costs more at GHc1,300. What you get is a phone with a bigger and notchless display, a bigger battery, better performance, and a better track record when it comes to software support. The TECNO Phantom 9 costs less at GHc900 and you get an AMOLED screen with an in-display fingerprint scanner and a higher-pixel selfie camera with LED flash.
However, you should note that the AMOLED screen will be costly to replace. Also, the fingerprint scanner will likely not work if your screen cracks and you don’t intend to replace it immediately.
Which of these devices won the Huawei Y9 Prime vs TECNO Phantom 9 clash? You decide which is the better deal for you. May the Force be with you.
